Kompa is a very popular Haitian music and dance. Its origins date back to the importation of merengue by Spanish settlers on the island of Hispaniola dating back to 1840 and to that of voodoo dances from the African heritage of Haitians.
Haitian music owes its origin to African culture. But when it comes to konpa, this music was born thanks to maestro Nemours Jean-Baptiste, who in 1955 introduced this new rhythm that is based on string instruments like the guitar and lute, the piano and the trumpet. The two most famous groups at the beginning of konpa are Orchestre Septentrional and Orchestre Tropicana.
The first was founded in 1948 in Cap Haïtien and the second was founded a few years later in the same city. And to this day, both groups perform around the world. Because of this longevity, these two groups have fans from the age of 10 to 90! In addition, Orchestre Septentrional has recorded six hundred songs, not counting collaborations with other artists.
One of Septentrional's most famous pieces is "Temwayaj", which has been performed many times and has allowed this group to remain in the minds and hearts of all generations. #I will never stop listening to this music and I think this feeling is shared by my Haitian brothers. Since 1955, konpa has been a light that shines in the darkness. And this music will remain in the hearts annds of Haitians.
